Fresh political developments suggest that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i are quietly working on a plan to resurrect the Azimio One Kenya Alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Multiple insiders reveal that Kalonzo, who currently heads the Wiper Democratic Movement, and Matiang’i—who is reportedly set to assume a senior leadership role within the Jubilee Party—have been holding discreet consultations aimed at breathing new life into the once-powerful Azimio coalition. The talks are said to focus on building a fresh political vehicle that can challenge President William Ruto’s administration in the next presidential race.
Azimio One Kenya Alliance was originally formed by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Kalonzo Musyoka as a broad-based coalition ahead of the 2022 elections. Raila Odinga flew the Azimio flag in the presidential contest but was defeated by William Ruto, who clinched victory on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Following the 2022 polls, the alliance gradually weakened. By 2023, Azimio had effectively gone dormant after Raila Odinga and key allies entered into cooperation with the government, leaving the coalition politically inactive.
With the 2027 elections fast approaching, sources indicate that Kalonzo and Matiang’i have now assembled a team of legal experts to explore the technical and constitutional pathways for reviving the Azimio brand. The strategy, however, reportedly comes with a major political exclusion.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) are said to be deliberately left out of the proposed arrangement. Insiders claim the duo is wary of Gachagua’s vocal assertions of dominance in the Mt. Kenya voting bloc and prefer to chart a separate political course without him.
One source familiar with the discussions is quoted as saying that the architects of the plan want Gachagua “to pursue his ‘Wantam’ narrative independently,” signalling a clear political separation.
These emerging details have also been reported by The Star newspaper corridors of power, lending further weight to claims that a major opposition realignment could be in the making as Kenya’s 2027 political battle lines begin to take shape.

As behind-the-scenes manoeuvres continue, the potential revival of Azimio—without some of the country’s most vocal political figures—could significantly reshape Kenya’s opposition landscape in the months ahead.
