National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has launched a sharp attack on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of interfering in the affairs of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and fueling political instability.
Ichung’wah was responding to remarks made by Uhuru during the burial of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo in Kakamega County on Tuesday. At the funeral, Uhuru criticised leaders serving in the broad-based government who had accused him of attempting to take control of ODM following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Ichung’wah Accuses Uhuru of Selfish Politics
Speaking during an interview on NTV, the Kikuyu MP described the former head of state as a selfish politician who thrives on undermining others to remain politically relevant.
According to Ichung’wah, Uhuru continues to believe that financial influence can shape Kenya’s political direction, despite having left office.
“When I look at Uhuru, he appears to be someone who works excessively hard to bring others down so that he remains the greatest of all time. He still believes that his deep pockets, just as he believed in 2022, can alter the political decisions of Kenyans,” Ichung’wah said.
Claims of Sponsoring Divisions Within ODM
The National Assembly Majority Leader echoed claims earlier made by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, alleging that Uhuru is sponsoring individuals within ODM to cause internal divisions.
Ichung’wah argued that the ongoing squabbles within the opposition party are rooted in the mistaken belief that money can buy political loyalty.
“As Junet Mohamed stated, there was an alleged offer of KSh 1 billion to buy ODM. ODM is not for sale. Political parties are built through commitment, ideology, and organisation—not money,” he said.
Call for Uhuru to Act as a Statesman
Ichung’wah urged the former president to embrace his role as a statesman and retire from active day-to-day politics, warning that continued involvement diminishes his legacy and public standing.
He further claimed that Uhuru has yet to recover from the 2022 General Election, in which he openly opposed President William Ruto’s bid for the presidency.
“Having served this country for ten years, retirement should elevate you to the stature of a statesman and a father figure. Unfortunately, he is yet to heal from the 2022 election loss after making his rivalry with President William Ruto deeply personal. Kenya is bigger than any individual,” Ichung’wah added.
