The late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, was buried with a lit torch, in line with Tiriki community traditions, a practice believed to symbolically pursue justice when a death is considered mysterious.
According to Tiriki customs, when a person is believed to have died under unclear or suspicious circumstances, they may be buried with a live torch and a knife. Traditionally, this ritual is believed to spiritually “follow” those responsible until the truth comes to light.
Jirongo died in December following a road accident in Naivasha along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
However, his death immediately raised questions among close friends and family members, who claimed he was expected to be at his home on the night the accident occurred.
Questions Surrounding Jirongo’s Final Hours
In the days following his death, speculation intensified after reports emerged that Jirongo had attended a meeting with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula shortly before the incident. While no official findings have linked anyone to wrongdoing, the meeting has been widely discussed online, with some commentators drawing their own conclusions.
Jirongo, widely regarded as an astute businessman and political deal-maker, had in recent months been openly critical of President William Ruto’s administration. This stance has fuelled online rumours and unverified claims suggesting his death may not have been accidental, though no evidence has been presented to support such assertions.
Burial Ritual and Subsequent Public Reactions
Barely a week after Jirongo was laid to rest in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, social media users began linking unrelated political events to the traditional torch ritual.
On New Year’s Day, President William Ruto attended a football tournament in Kakamega, sponsored by Governor Fernandes Barasa. During his address, the Head of State appeared to stammer while explaining the affordable housing programme, a moment that quickly went viral.
Some online commentators interpreted the incident through the lens of Tiriki beliefs, claiming that confusion and public discomfort are among the symbolic signs associated with the torch ritual. Traditionally, believers say such signs may include persistent confusion or misfortune befalling those believed to have wronged the deceased.
Viral Video Sparks Debate
While these interpretations remain cultural beliefs and online speculation, the video of President Ruto’s speech has continued to circulate widely, igniting debate across social media platforms.
