Renowned academic and presidential advisor Prof. Makau Mutua has strongly criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent remarks on Somali political issues.
In comments shared on social media, Prof. Mutua questioned Gachagua’s credibility and the sincerity of his advocacy for Somali communities.
In a pointed Twitter post, Mutua argued that no intelligent person should take Gachagua seriously as a champion of Somali interests.
“He should spare the country his fake crocodile tears,” Mutua wrote, questioning when Gachagua “discovered” that Somalis are full citizens of Kenya with stakes in what he calls ‘Kenya Inc.’
Mutua accused Gachagua of cynicism and hypocrisy, suggesting his statements were politically motivated. He emphasised that historical grievances should not be exploited to advance partisan interests.
According to Mutua, Gachagua has never genuinely advocated for or protected Somali citizens, instead allowing political expediency to guide his actions.
“The fox has never guarded, or protected, the chicken coop,” Mutua wrote, highlighting his view that Gachagua’s involvement in Somali affairs is self-serving. He added that Somali communities are fully capable of articulating their own concerns on governance and corruption without external interference.
Mutua concluded his commentary with a stark warning, asserting that Gachagua should be treated with the contempt he “rightly deserves.”
In recent months, Gachagua has been accused of inciting Somali residents against their leaders, claiming they have misappropriated public funds and built luxurious homes in Nairobi.
