Democracy For Citizens (DCP) party leader Rigathi Gachagua has called on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to publicly account for his meeting with the late Cyrus Jirongo, which occurred hours before the former minister’s death.
Leading a delegation of united opposition leaders after visiting Jirongo’s Nairobi home on Tuesday, Gachagua demanded a swift, thorough investigation and full accountability into the circumstances surrounding the death.
He specifically questioned the silence of individuals who were with Jirongo in Karen on the night he died. “Kenyans are asking, who were the last people to be seen with Cyrus Jirongo? Why are they quiet?” Gachagua posed to the media. “Speaker Wetang’ula should have given a very good account of what his plans were and where he was going.”
The DCP leader further drew a stark parallel, likening Jirongo’s death to the 1975 political assassination of J.M. Kariuki, which he alleges was carried out in the presence of the legislator’s own kinsmen. Kariuki’s murder, widely regarded as a political assassination, remains officially unsolved despite a parliamentary inquiry that implicated senior state officials.
However, Gachagua’s concerns were addressed during the same media briefing by former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, who chairs the burial planning committee. Gumo stated that Speaker Wetang’ula had already visited Jirongo’s home on Sunday, December 14, to explain the events.
According to Gumo, Wetang’ula clarified that he was with Jirongo in Karen on December 13 until approximately 9:30 p.m. The Speaker then excused himself, leaving Jirongo in the company of two other friends, whom Gumo did not name. Jirongo was later found dead on Saturday morning along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in Naivasha.
