Thousands of Kenyans gathered at Nyayo Stadium to bid farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday.
Raila Odinga died of a heart attack in India, where he was receiving medical treatment.
On Friday, the government organised a state funeral, drawing massive crowds of Kenyans and dignitaries who came to pay their final respects to the man fondly referred to as Baba (Father).
President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta led the nation in mourning, describing Raila as a democrat and an enigma whose contribution to Kenya’s political history will never be forgotten.
The solemn event underscored calls for national unity amid growing public discontent over recent protests against the proposed Cybercrimes Bill, which critics claim poses a threat to freedom of expression.
Meanwhile, social media users on platform X (formerly Twitter) mocked President Ruto by nicknaming him ‘Githinji’ — a Kikuyu word meaning “butcher” — in viral posts condemning his administration’s approach to governance and civil rights. The hashtag trended widely, garnering more than 35,000 interactions.
