A video has emerged showing officers from the Nairobi City Inspectorate Department being harassed by residents while enforcing city bylaws on Friday.
In the clip, the residents—believed to be of Somali origin—can be seen chasing away the city askaris using rungus and batons.
During the chaos, four city council officers sustained injuries and were rushed to a city hospital for treatment.
Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geoffrey Omatoke Mosiria strongly condemned the incident, terming it criminal for members of the public to attack officers in the line of duty.
“It is the highest level of impunity for anyone to attack officers of the Nairobi City County Government while they are lawfully discharging their duties. Earlier today, our officers, who had gone to remove an illegal structure that was blocking a public road, were violently attacked and beaten by mobilized goons behaving like criminals,” Mosiria stated.
He further emphasised that an attack on one officer amounts to an attack on the entire Nairobi County Government, adding that “we shall revisit this matter firmly to ensure justice is done.”
