Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance leadership is still determined to woo former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka to leave the opposition and work with the ruling coalition.

For the past year, Kalonzo—who has repeatedly stated his intention to run for the presidency in the August 2027 elections—has aligned himself with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua was impeached last year over allegations of promoting tribalism and stoking ethnic divisions.

Together, Gachagua and Kalonzo have built a strong opposition front that has given President William Ruto and his deputy, Kindiki, many sleepless nights. With less than two years to the crucial 2027 polls, the ruling side is making every effort to convince Kalonzo to abandon the opposition and join what they describe as a broad-based government.

Speaking on Wednesday when he hosted a delegation of Kitui County leaders at his residence, Kindiki stressed that they will not relent in persuading Kalonzo since, according to him, the Wiper leader does not belong in the company of “conmen and tribalists”.

“Hatuwezi kubali ndugu yetu (Kalonzo) anaenda na watu wengine wakora. Wanafundisha yeye mambo ambayo si yake. Yeye ni muungwana, mstaarabu, na ni wakili kama mimi. Ni msomi, mtu aliye organized, na mtu wa kanisa,” Kindiki remarked.

He further admitted that no breakthrough has been achieved yet but maintained that efforts to win over Kalonzo are ongoing.

“Mimi bado najaribu namna hii, namna hii. Bado hata huyo ndugu yangu sija give up. Don’t worry. Msiwe na haraka. Na mumwambie akuje tusaidiane sasa tusonge mbele,” he added.

However, Kalonzo has consistently maintained that he will remain in opposition, making it clear that he will not betray the cause regardless of the pressure.
