Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has allegedly spent millions of shillings of taxpayers’ money to mobilise women to stage demonstrations in Kirinyaga, targeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent remarks.
During his whirlwind tour of Embu and Kirinyaga counties over the weekend, Mr. Gachagua accused Governors Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire of Embu of hiring goons to disrupt his political rallies in Makutano and Embu towns.

While addressing supporters on Sunday, Gachagua further claimed that the two county bosses were being used by President William Ruto to cause division within the Mount Kenya region. According to him, the president views a united Mount Kenya as a threat to his re-election bid in 2027 and has resorted to using “traitors” like Waiguru and Mbarire to weaken the region’s political unity.
In what appeared to be a well-orchestrated response, Waiguru on Monday reportedly hired hundreds of women to hold protests against Gachagua’s statements. The demonstrators, carrying placards, accused the former deputy president of disrespecting women leaders.
Waiguru is also said to have contracted several bloggers who, under the hashtags #RespectWomenLeaders and #GachaguaMisogynyExposed, launched online attacks portraying Gachagua as a misogynist. Reliable sources further allege that even State House-affiliated bloggers were enlisted to amplify the narrative.
Despite facing political setbacks following his impeachment last year, Gachagua has made a strong comeback, emerging as a formidable force in Mount Kenya politics. His growing influence is said to be unsettling President Ruto and his allies, particularly as he appears to have consolidated significant support across the region ahead of the 2027 general election.
At present, Ruto’s surrogates from Mount Kenya are reportedly encountering increasingly hostile receptions from residents in what remains Kenya’s largest voting bloc.
