For years, political opponents of the late Right Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga have often downplayed his academic achievements, dismissing him as a mere “welder.”
However, historical records and testimonies from the University of Nairobi confirm that Raila was, in fact, an accomplished engineering lecturer before fully venturing into politics.
Raila Odinga graduated from the Technical University of Magdeburg in the former East Germany with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Upon his return to Kenya in 1970, he joined the University of Nairobi’s Department of Mechanical Engineering as a lecturer.
During his tenure, he taught courses related to thermodynamics and machine design, earning respect among students and colleagues for his technical expertise and innovative approach to mechanical systems.
Former students have described him as “a brilliant mind who combined theory with practical insight.”
His background in engineering later influenced his involvement in industrial development, including his role in establishing the East African Spectre Ltd — a company specializing in the manufacturing of gas cylinders.
A photo of Raila with his fellow lecturers now puts to rest long-running political propaganda that sought to belittle his professional background.
