Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has offered a fresh explanation for why the united opposition candidate was trounced by the United Democratic Alliance’s Leo Wamuthende in the just-concluded Mbeere North by-election.
During the high-stakes contest, President William Ruto’s preferred candidate, Wamuthende, convincingly defeated Newton Karish of the Democratic Party (DP), a party aligned with the united opposition under Gachagua’s leadership.
Speaking publicly for the first time after the mini-polls, Gachagua claimed that the defeat did not reflect on him or his new outfit, the Democracy For Citizens Party (DCP), because the party did not field a candidate in Mbeere North.
Instead, he highlighted victories his party secured elsewhere, arguing that the wins were a strong foundation for building political muscle. DCP clinched three ward by-elections: Kariobangi North in Nairobi, Kisa East in Kakamega, and Narok Town in Narok County.
Seeking to distance himself from the Mbeere North loss, Gachagua insisted he merely went to support the DP candidate, emphasising that his primary focus remains on strengthening DCP.
“Don’t be bothered by what happened in Mbeere North. DCP didn’t have a candidate there. We had candidates in Kariobangi North, Narok Town, and Kisa East, and we won. We were defeated slightly in Purko and Magarini. A seven-month-old party winning three out of five seats is a big achievement. I only went to help DP in Mbeere North. They actually won, but their victory was denied. We now focus on our party, DCP,” Gachagua said.
Meanwhile, Gachagua revealed that DCP is already crafting an aggressive strategy to take over Nairobi in the 2027 elections. According to him, the Kariobangi North victory is just the beginning.
He disclosed that he had struck an agreement with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka that would give DCP the lion’s share of Nairobi’s top seats.
Gachagua announced that DCP intends to field candidates for the governor, senator, and woman representative positions, as well as in 16 out of Nairobi’s 17 constituencies and 75 out of 88 wards.
“DCP is the party for Nairobi, and the Kariobangi North win marks the start of our politics in the city. We have planned ourselves very well. We have agreed with the Wiper leader that the governor, senate, and woman representative seats will be taken by DCP,” he said.
