Like It Or Not, Rigathi Gachagua Is the ‘New Raila Odinga’—Everybody in Government & ODM Is Talking About Him

He may not have sought the title. He may not even want it. But wittingly or unwittingly, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped into the rather large political shoes once worn by the late Raila Odinga.

And everyone—from State House mandarins to ODM diehards—can’t seem to stop talking about him.

Raila, the revered ‘Baba’ of Kenya’s democratic journey, breathed his last in October last year while undergoing treatment in Kerala, India. His exit left a cavernous hole in the country’s political arena—one that many thought would take years to fill.

Turns out, it’s being filled right before our eyes.

Thanks to a cocktail of self-inflicted blunders from the Kenya Kwanza administration and strategic silence from opposition heavyweights, Gachagua is steadily morphing into the very thing his critics laughed off: a bona fide opposition juggernaut.

When he was impeached last year, Kenya Kwanza leaders scoffed, predicting he would fade into oblivion within a fortnight.

Joke’s on them.

Like the proverbial phoenix, Gachagua has risen from the political ashes, and today he isn’t just making noise from the fringes—he is calling shots. His name dominates boardroom chatter, roadside banter, and radio phone-ins. In government corridors and ODM meeting halls alike, one question lingers: What is Rigathi Gachagua up to?

What sets him apart from the usual political rabble-rousers is his sharp tongue—now whetted with a newfound grasp of national issues beyond Mount Kenya. He quotes literature, dissects policy, and speaks less like a regional kingpin and more like a statesman in waiting.

His latest move? baiting the vote-rich Northern Kenya corridor.

Gachagua threw down the gauntlet, demanding to know what leaders from the region have done with billions of shillings in the Constituency Development Fund and national government allocations.

The response from the political elite was predictable: they called him tribal.

But the electorate? They didn’t take the bait—at least, not the one their leaders were dangling.

Instead of joining the chorus of insults, wananchi in Northern Kenya echoed Gachagua’s demands. They want accountability. They want transparency. They want to know where the money went.

That alone should send shivers down the spine of every incumbent.

On Tuesday, when President William Ruto toured Garissa County to disburse Nyota Funds, the air in the room wasn’t buzzing about the President’s agenda.

It was buzzing about Gachagua.

That is the truest measure of political relevance. Not titles. Not entourages. But the sheer weight of your name in rooms you are not even in.

Like Raila in his heyday, Gachagua has mastered the art of being everywhere without leaving his living room. His name is on every politician’s lips. His next move is the subject of speculation from Wiper to UDA.

Whether you detest him or admire him, one thing is clear: Rigathi Gachagua is no longer a footnote in Kenya’s political script. He is fast becoming the main character.

And as 2027 approaches, the political stage is slowly, quietly tilting in his direction.

Like Raila before him, he isn’t just making headlines.

He is defining them.
