The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Mombasa.

In a statement shared on the party’s official platforms, the leadership announced that Sifuna had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

He will be replaced in an acting capacity by Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo until a substantive office holder is elected.

“Party National Executive Committee meeting in Mombasa today has resolved to relieve SG @edwinsifuna of his responsibilities with immediate effect. Effectively, Hon. Catherine Omanyo, who is one of the Deputy Secretary Generals, will act in this position until a substantive holder of the office will be elected,” the party said in a tweet.

The high-stakes meeting was attended by top ODM leaders, including Oburu Odinga.

Sifuna’s ouster comes amid growing tensions within the party, with reports indicating he has faced criticism from sections of the leadership over his outspoken stance against the current working relationship between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The Nairobi Senator has also publicly declared that he will not support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027 , a political stand said to have unsettled some of his colleagues within the party.

His removal is likely to spark fresh political debate within ODM as the party navigates internal divisions ahead of the next general election.
