Kenyan comedian and former politician MC Jessy has once again found himself at the center of national debate after openly admitting that his support for President William Ruto is not based on leadership performance but purely on survival.
In a video that has been circulating online, MC Jessy bluntly stated that he is backing the head of state because, as he put it, “he cannot sleep hungry.” His remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with many Kenyans accusing him of political inconsistency and opportunism.
MC Jessy is no stranger to politics. Back in 2022, he attempted to join elective leadership by contesting for the Imenti South parliamentary seat. Unfortunately, his bid did not go as planned. He lost during the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations and later tried to run as an independent candidate but still failed to secure the seat.
After President Ruto was declared the winner of the 2022 general election, MC Jessy quickly returned to the ruling party’s camp. Reports suggest that his career in entertainment had slowed down, and he was seeking a way back into relevance and stability through political connections.
Interestingly, during the Gen Z-led protests in June 2024, MC Jessy appeared to take a different direction. He joined the wave of young Kenyans demanding change and even called for Ruto’s removal from power.
But now, in what many see as a dramatic U-turn, the comedian has abandoned the Gen Z movement and aligned himself once again with President Ruto’s administration. His explanation? Survival.
MC Jessy insists that supporting those in power is simply a matter of putting food on the table, adding that he cannot afford to struggle while Ruto is in the State House and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is comfortably settled in Karen.
As expected, the video has ignited serious online discussion about the state of Kenyan politics, loyalty, and the growing perception that many public figures support leaders not out of conviction but out of personal gain.
