Former Attorney General Justin Bedan (JB) Muturi has welcomed the High Court’s decision to order scrutiny and a recount of votes in the contested Mbeere North by-election, terming it a major step toward electoral justice.
The ruling, delivered in Newton Kariuki Ndwigwa vs IEBC & Others (Election Petition No. E002 of 2025) by Justice R. Mwongo, directed a thorough review of the electoral process, including access to KIEMS data, in a move aimed at enhancing transparency and credibility.
Reacting to the decision, Muturi described it as a victory for truth, accountability, and the will of the people.
“This is a major victory for truth, transparency, and the will of the people. The Court has opened the door for a full interrogation of the electoral process, ensuring that nothing is hidden and nothing is taken at face value,” he stated.
He emphasized that the ruling sends a strong message to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on the importance of accountability in managing elections.
According to Muturi, transparency must remain non-negotiable, with every step of the electoral process being open to verification and public scrutiny to build trust in democratic institutions.
“This ruling firmly places the IEBC on notice—accountability is not optional. A truly free and fair election is one where the process inspires confidence and the outcome reflects, without doubt, the sovereign will of the people,” he added.
