A man from Baringo County, identified as Rerimoi Barsitei, is appealing to the Kenyan government for assistance after being sentenced to 80 years in a Mexican prison.
Barsitei, a former athlete, claims he was denied a fair trial, alleging that he had neither legal representation nor a translator during the court proceedings despite repeatedly seeking assistance from Kenyan diplomatic officials.
He maintains that he unknowingly accommodated individuals who were later identified as criminals and insists he had no involvement in the offences for which he was convicted.
Now serving his sentence far from home, Barsitei is calling on the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, D.C., which oversees Kenya’s diplomatic relations with Mexico, to intervene and help him pursue legal redress.
His appeal has reignited debate over the legal and consular support available to Kenyans facing criminal charges abroad, with many calling for stronger diplomatic assistance to citizens in foreign jurisdiction
