A man who sought to overturn his 14-year prison sentence ended up receiving the death penalty after the courts found that his original punishment was too lenient.

Daniel was convicted in 2012 for robbery with violence and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Dissatisfied with the sentence, he filed an appeal.

Before the appeal was heard, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) warned him that it would seek a harsher sentence.

The High Court also cautioned him that pursuing the appeal could result in a stiffer punishment.

Despite the warnings, Daniel chose to proceed with the appeal.

After re-evaluating the evidence, the High Court upheld his conviction and found that the 14-year sentence was unduly lenient.

The court enhanced the sentence to death, as provided for under the law at the time.

Daniel later appealed to the Court of Appeal, hoping to overturn both the conviction and the enhanced sentence.

However, on March 25, 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal and upheld both the conviction and the death sentence.
