Three suspected highway robbers who disappeared into hiding after a daring robbery attempt along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway have been arrested following a sustained investigation by detectives in Mtito Andei.
The suspects are linked to an incident in which one of their accomplices was fatally shot when the gang’s firearm discharged during a struggle with their intended victim.
The incident happened on May 6, 2026, near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei, when a gang riding on a motorcycle staged a fake roadside emergency to lure a transit driver into stopping.
The suspects reportedly attempted to hijack his Subaru Impreza at gunpoint.
However, their plan backfired when, during a fierce struggle with the driver, the gang’s firearm discharged, fatally shooting one of the attackers identified as Gift Musau.
His accomplices reportedly fled the scene on the motorcycle, leaving their fallen colleague behind.
Although the suspects escaped that day, detectives continued pursuing their trail.
Following sustained investigations and intelligence-led operations, detectives from Mtito Andei on Friday, August 21, 2026, tracked down and arrested two suspects at their hideout in Kinyambu.
The suspects were identified as Alex Mueti Kasina and Stephen Kalungo Joel.
The following day, detectives arrested a third suspect, Jamlick Muli Muasa, alias Star, at his shop in Kinyambu.
A search of his premises led to the recovery of two mobile phones.
A further search of his residence in Maikuu, Kinyambu, resulted in the recovery of several identity cards bearing different names, multiple driving licences bearing different names, among other items.
The three suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 24, 2026, to face charges including murder, attempted robbery with violence and being in possession of ammunition without a licence.
