Tragedy has struck the banking industry following the death of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Head of Data Protection, Rosemary Koech Kimwatu, who was reportedly found dead at her home in Ngong on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Rosemary, a mother of four, had built an impressive career spanning nearly two decades across law, fintech, public policy and technology.
She reportedly worked with fintech companies including WayaWaya and MODE before joining Safaricom PLC as a Public Policy Manager.
In June 2022, she joined KCB as the bank’s Data Protection Officer and was promoted to Head of Data Protection a year later.
Her role placed her in charge of data protection compliance across the bank’s operations.
According to accounts attributed to former colleagues and industry peers, Rosemary had reportedly been experiencing difficulties at her workplace in recent months.
She is said to have confided in some trusted colleagues about what she described as an increasingly hostile work environment and concerns that her professional reputation was being undermined.
Some of those familiar with her situation have alleged that she faced persistent pressure from her immediate supervisor.
Her death has left colleagues and friends mourning a professional they describe as highly dedicated and committed to data protection and digital rights.
