Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opened up about an alleged heated confrontation with President William Ruto following the June 25 protests, claiming that the President called him on the phone and verbally abused him after he publicly disagreed with the government’s handling of the demonstrations.
Speaking during a meeting with Gen Zs at his Wamunyoro residence, Gachagua recounted the events surrounding the June 25, 2025 protests and the fallout that followed.
According to Gachagua, he had travelled to Mombasa on the day the protests rocked different parts of the country.
That evening, President Ruto called for a press conference but did not invite him.
“The killings happened on June 25th. In the evening, Ruto called for a press conference; he never invited me, ordinarily I would be there. He called the young people criminals and treasonous; I was offended,” Gachagua said.
The former DP said he decided to address the matter publicly the following day after strongly disagreeing with the President’s remarks.
“The following day, I called for a press conference; I said I did not agree with the decision,” he added.
Gachagua then claimed that Ruto later called him and expressed his anger over the public rebuke.
“He later called me, abused me, and told me I would know who he was and I would face the consequences,” Gachagua claimed.
The revelations come months after Gachagua was impeached as Deputy President in 2024 following months of disagreements with President Ruto.
He was subsequently replaced by Kithure Kindiki.
