The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Court Clerk attached to the Busia Law Courts after he was allegedly caught receiving a Ksh180,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a criminal case.
The suspect, identified as Wesley Kipkoech Langat, is alleged to have demanded and received the money from an accused person as an inducement to secure a lenient penalty in a case pending before the court.
According to the EACC, Langat allegedly claimed that he was acting on behalf of a Magistrate at the station when demanding the bribe.
The Commission commenced investigations after receiving a report that the Magistrate, through the Court Clerk, had allegedly demanded the money to secure a lenient outcome for a complainant and six co-accused persons in a case involving a commercial vehicle that had been impounded by police over alleged traffic offences.
EACC officers mounted an operation that led to Langat’s arrest after he allegedly received the Ksh180,000.
The suspect is currently being held at the Commission’s Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and is expected to be booked at Bungoma Police Station as investigations continue.
The arrest forms part of the Commission’s ongoing crackdown on bribery and other forms of corruption, aimed at safeguarding integrity and accountability in the delivery of public services and administration of justice.
EACC has reiterated its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing accountability within the justice system.
