Millions of people living in the US, UK, Canada and Europe send money to family in Kenya every year, and the amount you lose to fees depends heavily on which service you choose. Two transfers of the same size can cost very different amounts once you count both the transfer fee and the exchange rate. This guide explains how the main options compare so you can send more of your money home.

Last updated: October 2026. Fees and exchange rates change daily, so always compare live quotes in each app before you send.

The first thing to understand: the real cost of a transfer

Every provider makes money in two ways. The first is a visible fee. The second is a margin hidden in the exchange rate, which means you get fewer Kenyan shillings than the real market rate would give you. A service advertising “no fees” can still be expensive if its rate is poor.

The best way to compare is to look at one number: how many Kenyan shillings (KES) will your recipient actually receive? Enter the same amount in each app and compare the final KES figure.

Quick comparison

ProviderBest forHow it charges
WiseLarger transfers and transparent pricingUses the mid-market exchange rate and charges a small fixed fee plus a percentage
SendwaveSmall, regular M-Pesa transfersLow flat fee, with a small margin built into the exchange rate
RemitlyChoosing between speed and priceCheaper Economy option and faster, pricier Express option
WorldRemitCash pickup and wide payout choiceTransfer fee plus an exchange rate margin
Western UnionCash pickup for recipients without M-PesaFees and margins vary by country and payment method

Wise

Wise shows you the mid-market exchange rate, which is the real rate banks trade at, and then adds a clear fee. There is no hidden margin, so what you see is what you pay. It is regulated in the UK and US, and it is often among the cheapest options, especially as the amount gets larger. Wise is a strong choice for school fees, rent, and other bigger payments.

Sendwave

Sendwave specializes in sending to mobile money in Africa. It charges a low flat fee and builds a small margin into the exchange rate. For small transfers, it is frequently cheaper than Wise, so it suits people who send modest amounts every month straight to an M-Pesa number. It supports M-Pesa delivery only, so it will not work if your recipient needs cash pickup.

Remitly

Remitly offers two speeds. Economy is cheaper and takes longer, while Express is faster and costs more. If you are not in a hurry, Economy can be a good deal. Remitly often runs promotions for first-time customers, which can make your first transfer cheaper, but check the rate on later transfers as well.

WorldRemit

WorldRemit supports many sending countries and several ways to receive money, including mobile money, bank deposit and cash pickup. That flexibility is its main strength. For plain M-Pesa transfers, it is often more expensive than Wise or Sendwave, so compare the final KES amount before you commit.

Western Union

Western Union can now deliver straight to M-Pesa, and it still has the widest cash pickup network. It is rarely the cheapest option for ordinary transfers, but it can make sense when your recipient has no phone or bank account and needs to collect cash in person.

Which service should you choose?

  • Small, regular transfers to M-Pesa: Start by comparing Sendwave and Wise.
  • Large transfers such as school fees or rent: Wise is usually the strongest choice, because the percentage fee and fair exchange rate add up to real savings.
  • Recipient needs cash: Consider WorldRemit or Western Union.
  • Want a first-transfer discount: Check Remitly’s current offer.
  • Sending from the UK: Also compare LemFi and Wise, which are often competitive for UK to Kenya transfers.

Tips to save money on every transfer

  1. Compare the KES received, not the fee. The headline fee only tells half the story.
  2. Pay by bank transfer where possible. Debit and credit cards are usually more expensive.
  3. Send larger amounts less often if the provider charges a flat fee, because you pay the fee fewer times.
  4. Avoid bank wires for small amounts, since they often carry high fixed fees.
  5. Check for recipient charges. Moving money out of an M-Pesa wallet can add small extra fees, so sending directly to a paybill or till number, where the provider supports it, may save a step.
  6. Re-check the rate every time. Rates move, and the cheapest provider can change from month to month.

Is it safe to send money through these apps?

Stick to licensed, regulated providers, and use the official app or website. Never send money to someone you only know online, and be wary of anyone who asks you to pay in gift cards or cryptocurrency. Turn on two-factor authentication on your account, and double-check the recipient’s phone number before you confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send money to Kenya?

It depends on the amount and the country you send from. For small amounts, Sendwave is often cheapest, and for larger amounts Wise usually wins. Always compare live quotes.

How long does a transfer to M-Pesa take?

Most digital services deliver to M-Pesa within minutes, although the first transfer can take longer while the provider verifies your identity.

Do I need a bank account to send money?

You usually need a bank account or card to fund the transfer, but your recipient only needs an M-Pesa number to receive it.

Is Western Union still worth it?

It is rarely the cheapest for M-Pesa, but it is useful when the recipient needs to collect cash.

Rates and fees change often, so we update this guide regularly. Always confirm the final amount in the app before you send.
