The person who brought the deadly Ebola virus to Kenya is a Somali national who is known to Somali community leaders, including Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow.
The man, who boarded a Jambo Jet flight from Kampala to Kenya, went to Nairobi Hospital where he was diagnosed with the Ebola Bundibugyo virus, which has no cure.
After being admitted at the hospital for two days, the man died and was buried at Lang’ata Cemetery under tough instructions from the Ministry of Health.
What is shocking many Kenyans is how a man who knew he had Ebola when he left Congo travelled all the way to bring the deadly disease to 55 million Kenyans.
Other Kenyans are asking how the man passed the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport(JKIA) health screening facility without being noticed.
Kenyans are asking why the airport screening system did not detect the case if the country’s preparedness measures were already in place.
“If the system was ready, why did the airport screening not trigger further assessment?” one Kenyan posed.
The Ministry of Health has identified 28 contacts of the deceased, including family members and health workers, and is tracing 23 passengers and four crew members who travelled on the same flight.
The patient’s body was buried in line with Ebola safe and dignified burial protocols.
