President William Ruto’s dream of securing a second term in 2027 is fading faster than ever after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua touched down from the United States on Monday and immediately hit the ground running, wasting no time in consolidating the opposition alliance that is being built to send the President home after a single term.
Gachagua, who spent close to two months in the United States meeting Kenyans in the diaspora and building international support for the united opposition’s cause, returned to Kenya and within hours was already deep in strategic discussions with one of the country’s most exciting new political forces.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, accompanied by Linda Mwananchi leaders, made his way to Gachagua’s Wamunyoro home where the two sat down for what sources describe as a frank and focused conversation about the path to removing Ruto from power in 2027.
Sifuna and his delegation reportedly gave Gachagua their firm commitment that the Linda Mwananchi movement and The Equitable Party are fully invested in the wantam mission, regardless of the obstacles the state throws in their way.
With less than ten months remaining before the general election, the meeting carries enormous significance. Sifuna has emerged as one of the most credible and widely supported presidential contenders in the united opposition stable, commanding a near-cult following among the youth and drawing massive crowds wherever he goes. His Equitable Party attracted 1.3 million registered members within 24 hours of its launch, a feat that has rattled the ruling establishment and signalled that a genuine political tsunami is building.
The fact that Gachagua chose to meet Sifuna within hours of landing back in Kenya sends a clear message about how seriously the united opposition is treating the 2027 timeline and how urgently the pieces of the anti-Ruto coalition are being assembled.
For Ruto, watching his two most formidable opponents sitting together in a living room in Wamunyoro is not a comfortable image to wake up to.
