Activist Nerima Wako has dismissed circulating social media claims suggesting that popular Gen Z activist Mercy Tarus was found death at her apartment, clarifying that the reports were false and misleading.
In a strongly worded statement, Nerima said she had personally spoken to Tarus and confirmed that she is safe and well, urging the public to ignore the rumours spreading online.
“I just spoke to Tarus. She is fine,” she stated. “What is not fine is the culture on this platform that relentlessly targets, bullies, and harasses, especially young women this week.”
She criticised the rapid spread of unverified information on social media, warning that such behaviour often causes unnecessary anxiety, stress, and emotional harm to those targeted.
Some people, she said, have become so comfortable sharing misinformation that they no longer take time to consider the impact of their words.
“Silence sometimes is a refusal to dignify nonsense,” she added, noting that Tarus does not owe anyone proof of her well-being or explanations to strangers demanding updates online.
Nerima further emphasized that in cases involving serious allegations or concerns, communication should come from close family members rather than social media speculation.
“What was posted is simply false,” she said, calling out the individuals behind the rumours as reckless.
