Veteran gynecologist and obstetrician Dr. Job Obwaka died of poisoning, a preliminary police report indicates.
Dr. Obwaka, who also served as chairman of the Nairobi Hospital Board, died last Friday at the Kitengela home of his girlfriend, where the two had been sharing a meal.
His girlfriend was identified as Beatrice Wangare, 45, and she is currently detained at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi. Police have since collected food and household samples from the residence for toxicological testing.
Dr. Obwaka collapsed at Wangare’s home and was rushed to The Nairobi Hospital by ambulance, but was pronounced dead on arrival shortly after 7 p.m., despite emergency resuscitation efforts by paramedics.
According to an affidavit sworn by Sergeant Rodan Zioka of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Dr. Obwaka visited the woman’s home on the evening of his death. The two shared a meal, after which the doctor asked for water and retreated to a bedroom.
The affidavit further states that Dr. Obwaka was later found lying face up, dressed in trousers and a vest, with a weak pulse and slow, laboured breathing. Wangare raised the alarm and contacted her neighbour, Shadrack Korir, who helped call for an ambulance.
A paramedic responded to the emergency, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and rushed Dr. Obwaka to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
DCI officers subsequently collected samples from the house, including items linked to the meal the pair had shared. The samples are set to be submitted to the government chemist as part of ongoing toxicology tests to establish the precise cause of Dr. Obwaka’s death.
Police arrested Wangare on Saturday evening. She remains detained at Kilimani Police Station as investigators await toxicology results from both government and family-appointed pathologists.
