A Kenyan man living in the United States has pleaded guilty to the killing of his former girlfriend in a case that has shocked both investigators and the wider community.

Nobert Matara, 33, admitted to first degree murder on April 29, 2026, in connection with the 2024 death of 31 year old Tracy Nyariki in Newark, Delaware.

Authorities say the incident occurred on December 17, 2024, when Matara attacked Nyariki inside her apartment, stabbing her multiple times before dismembering her body. He later placed her remains in a suitcase and fled to Maryland, where he was arrested days later in Aberdeen after police tracked him down.

The case began as a missing person investigation after Nyariki failed to report to work. Prosecutors have described the crime as deeply disturbing. Matara now faces a mandatory life sentence, with sentencing yet to be scheduled.
