A Kilimani-based Chinese restaurant operating within the China Town complex has come under scrutiny following allegations of poor working conditions and unfair pay raised by a staff member.
In a message sent to blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, the whistleblower, who requested anonymity for fear of victimisation and losing their job, accused the establishment, identified as Zongken Mystery Crab Hotel, of exploiting Kenyan workers.
The staff member alleged that employees are being paid only KSh 400 per day, despite working 12-hour shifts from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, six days a week, without any overtime compensation.
According to the complaint, workers have repeatedly requested to be placed on monthly salary structures, but management has allegedly refused, arguing that such arrangements would require them to account for weekly rest days in a different manner.
The whistleblower further claims that payments are made weekly through M-Pesa, creating a digital record of the low wages being issued to employees.
Employees are now appealing to the Ministry of Labour and other relevant authorities to intervene and investigate the working conditions at the establishment, as well as ensure compliance with Kenyan labour laws governing wages, working hours, and employee welfare.
