The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has been thrown into disarray after its candidate for the Magarini Constituency by-election abruptly withdrew from the race, citing frustrations within the party’s leadership. The by-election is scheduled for 27th November.

In a letter issued on Monday, Furaha Chengo Ngumbao, a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), expressed deep disappointment with the handling of internal affairs by the National Elections Board (NEB) and Secretary-General Hezron Obanga.

“My experience with the NEB and the Secretary-General has been profoundly disheartening. The persistent lack of communication, the disregard for grassroots concerns, and the failure to issue clear directives have created a situation where aspirants like myself are left to navigate blindly,” Ngumbao stated.

He went on to decry what he termed opaque decision-making processes and the marginalization of NEC members in key deliberations, saying these issues had eroded his trust in the party’s leadership.

“I hope that future leadership will embrace transparency, inclusivity, and accountability for the good of the party and its members,” he added.

Ngumbao further urged Rigathi Gachagua, who is the party leader, to rebuild trust by actively engaging with members and supporters, warning that failure to do so could alienate the party’s grassroots base.

However, sources within the party have alleged that Ngumbao’s withdrawal was not solely due to internal frustrations. They claim he was approached by state operatives and offered a Sh100 million bribe to step down and publicly endorse the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate.

The Magarini parliamentary seat became vacant after the High Court annulled the 2022 election results following a petition challenging the validity of the vote.

This development deals a significant blow to Gachagua’s political strategy in the region, with insiders suggesting that the move could weaken his influence ahead of the crucial by-election.
