Police Constable Jim Richardson Okundi was pronounced dead on arrival at Russia Hospital in Kisumu after he was struck on the head by a stone during violence that erupted during a Linda Mwananchi rally.
Okundi was among several police officers injured after a group of attackers reportedly targeted the Linda Mwananchi Brigade led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other political leaders.
The police officer was driving a government Isuzu D-Max when he was hit on the right side of his head, near the ear, by a stone thrown by a goon.
He was rushed to Russia Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
At least 10 police officers were listed as having sustained various injuries during the confrontation.
The injuries included bruises, cuts, leg injuries and back pain.
Several vehicles were also reportedly damaged and set on fire during the chaos.
Among those injured was Bernard Ochieng, an employee in the office of Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda.
Ochieng reportedly sustained serious injuries to his right hand, with all the fingers chopped off with a panga, in addition to multiple deep cuts.
The violence also left the Lake Victoria SDA Church conference room and offices damaged.
