President William Ruto is reportedly working tirelessly behind the scenes to avoid defeat in the upcoming by-elections in the Malava, Mbeere North, and Banisa constituencies.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the by-elections are scheduled for November 7. Political analysts view these contests as a crucial test of strength between President Ruto and the opposition, which is being fronted by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In Banisa Constituency, DCP had fielded Mohamed Aden to face off against Ahmed Maalim Hassan, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate backed by President Ruto.

However, reports indicate that after assessing the political ground, President Ruto became concerned that his candidate could face a humiliating defeat at the hands of DCP. In a strategic move, he allegedly approached Mohamed Abdi and persuaded him to pull out of the race.

According to a statement released by DCP on Thursday evening, Mohamed Aden was offered Sh100 million to withdraw from the contest and throw his support behind the UDA candidate. In addition to the hefty payout, he was reportedly promised an ambassadorial appointment as part of the deal.

The DCP statement, shared on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the move, terming it as political bribery and a direct attack on democracy. The party vowed to remain steadfast in its mission to challenge President Ruto’s influence in the region.

Here is a screenshot of the DCP party statement.
