Seven people, including medical practitioners and a private clinic based in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, have been charged at the Milimani Law Courts for allegedly conspiring to defraud the Social Health Authority (SHA) of more than KSh 2 million through fake medical claims.

The accused — Patrick Kimuyu Kanya, Faith Chepkirui Bil, Steven Okinyi Ojwang, Justine Baraka, Pauline Wanjiru, Naida Mbevu, and Jambo Jipya Medical Clinic — face multiple counts of forgery, uttering false documents, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

They all denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.

The court released the first two accused on KSh 600,000 bond or KSh 200,000 cash bail, while the others were freed on KSh 200,000 bond or KSh 70,000 cash bail, each with one surety.

According to investigators, the accused falsified medical records between November 2024 and June 2025, leading to fraudulent SHA payments totaling KSh 2,032,680.

In one instance, Patrick Kanya and Faith Chepkirui allegedly claimed KSh 30,000 for a caesarean section that never happened — the patient reportedly delivered normally.

Other accused persons are linked to forged inpatient records and clinical notes for patients identified as Agnes Chisinde and Lucas Mwamba.

The case will be mentioned again on October 21, 2025, for further directions.
