The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) captain who is in custody over the murder of his wife has been accused of issuing threats to the deceased’s relatives.
The family, together with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, moved to court, alleging that the suspect, Edwin Muthomi Kaunga, had continued targeting them through threats despite being in custody.
Sonko, who was seen caring for the couple’s daughter in viral videos following Anita Mugweru’s death, has been listed as an interested party in the proceedings.
Nakuru Senior Principal Magistrate Adet Vincent Okello issued orders barring Edwin from harassing, tormenting, intimidating, or threatening members of his late wife’s family.
Serah Nyokabi Mugweru, a relative of the deceased, claimed that Kaunga had continued to terrorise family members while in custody through calls allegedly made using a mobile phone.
“Shockingly, upon being taken into custody, the respondent herein has since been threatening, harassing, intimidating and tormenting my family and me,” Nyokabi stated in her supporting affidavit.
She told the court that several relatives had received calls from a phone number whose caller repeatedly identified himself as Edwin.
According to the affidavit, the alleged threats also extended to the child left behind following her mother’s death.
“The said phone number has reached out to various members of my family threatening that he would come for the child of the deceased and the respondent herein,” the affidavit states.
Kaunga was arrested in April this year following the brutal murder of his wife, Anita Mugweru, the mother of his biological daughter, during a domestic dispute.
The court orders are intended to protect the deceased’s family as the murder case against the KDF officer continues through the judicial process.
