M-Shwari remains one of Kenya’s most relied-upon mobile banking platforms. Jointly operated by Safaricom and NCBA Bank, the service gives millions of M-Pesa users instant access to savings accounts and short-term micro-loans without filling out paperwork or visiting physical banking halls.

Whether you need quick funds for an unexpected expense or are looking to build a reliable credit reserve, understanding how M-Shwari calculates your creditworthiness is essential.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of how M-Shwari loan limits work, how to check your status, and actionable steps to boost your limit over time.

Understanding M-Shwari Loan Costs and Limits

M-Shwari offers 30-day mobile loans ranging from KSh 1,000 up to KSh 50,000 for individual subscribers.

Key details of the borrowing facility include:

  • Loan Charges: Every approved loan carries a 7.5% facility fee plus a 1.5% excise duty, bringing the total finance charge to 9% for the 30-day period. For example, if you borrow KSh 10,000, you pay back KSh 10,900.
  • Tenure: Standard loan tenure is 30 days.
  • Automated Scoring: Credit limits are determined entirely by NCBA’s automated algorithms, which analyze your M-Pesa account history and Safaricom network activity.

How to Check Your M-Shwari Limit and Request a Loan

Checking your eligible limit takes only a few seconds via USSD or the M-Pesa app:

Method 1: Using the USSD Code (*334#)

  1. Dial *334# on your Safaricom line.
  2. Select Option 4 (Loans and Savings).
  3. Select Option 1 (M-Shwari).
  4. Choose Loan, then select Check Loan Limit.
  5. Enter your M-Pesa PIN to receive an instant SMS with your limit details.

Method 2: Using the M-Pesa Super App

  1. Open the M-Pesa App on your smartphone.
  2. Tap the Grow tab at the bottom menu.
  3. Select M-Shwari and tap Loan.
  4. Your available borrowing limit will display directly on the screen.

5 Practical Steps to Increase Your M-Shwari Limit

Because limit upgrades are handled automatically by NCBA’s scoring systems, manual intervention is impossible. However, adopting these financial habits triggers positive score updates during review cycles:

1. Build a Consistent M-Shwari Savings Profile

Saving regularly in your M-Shwari deposit account is the single strongest signal you can send to NCBA. Regular savings earn up to 6.3% interest per year and demonstrate financial discipline, directly influencing your limit upward.

2. Utilize the Lock Savings Feature

Setting aside funds in an M-Shwari Lock Savings Account for 1 to 6 months shows low risk to the lender. Users who lock target savings consistently see faster credit limit adjustments.

3. Repay Loans On Time (or Early)

Always clear outstanding balances on or before your 30-day due date. Timely repayments build a solid credit record across the credit ecosystem, whereas defaults lead to limit reductions or zero-limit holds.

4. Increase M-Pesa Transaction Activity

Your SIM line activity provides the data M-Shwari uses to evaluate liquidity. Regularly buying airtime, settling bills via Paybill, using Buy Goods tills, and sending or receiving money keeps your profile active and healthy.

5. Keep a Clean Credit Record Across All Platforms

A negative listing on Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs) due to unpaid digital loans elsewhere will suppress your M-Shwari limit. Maintaining clean repayment histories across all mobile lenders ensures your account remains eligible for growth.

Important Safety Note: M-Shwari loan limit upgrades are strictly automated and free of charge. Never pay any third party or online agent claiming they can manually increase your M-Shwari limit, as these are fraudulent schemes
