The Social Health Authority (SHA)—which replaced NHIF—is the primary healthcare coverage framework in Kenya. To access healthcare benefits at empanelled public and private hospitals, all residents and employees must ensure their registration is complete, contribution status is active, and dependants are properly attached on the Afya Yangu portal.
Whether you are in the formal or informal sector, follow this guide to set up your account, add family members, and verify your active status.
Step 1: Account Registration via Afya Yangu or USSD
You can register digitally via web portal or offline via USSD:
- Web Portal (afyayangu.go.ke):
- Visit afyayangu.go.ke and select “Sign In / Register”.
- Select your identification type (National ID or Passport) and enter your ID number.
- Input your active mobile number to receive a 5-digit OTP verification code.
- Create a 4-digit Afya Yangu PIN to secure your account dashboard.
- USSD Shortcut (*147#):
- If you lack internet access, dial *147# from your registered mobile phone.
- Follow the prompts to register your ID number and confirm your details.
Step 2: How to Add Dependants (Spouse & Children)
Failure to register dependants online can result in hospitals declining coverage for family members during hospital visits.
- Log into your account at afyayangu.go.ke using your National ID and 4-digit PIN.
- From the main dashboard, navigate to “Manage Dependants.”
- Select “Add Dependant” and choose the relationship type (Spouse or Child).
- For a Spouse: Upload National ID copy and marriage certificate/affidavit.
- For Children: Enter the Birth Certificate Number or Notification of Birth number.
- Submit for instant digital linking to your primary SHA profile.
Step 3: Checking Contribution Status & Resolving Issues
- Checking Active Status: Dial *147# or log into afyayangu.go.ke to view your payment ledger.
- Salaried Employees: Ensure your employer is remitting monthly deductions under the unified eCitizen paybill framework.
- Self-Employed / Voluntary Contributors: Pay monthly contributions directly via the official portal prompt to keep your cover active.
- Support Line: If contributions do not reflect within 24 hours, contact the official helpline at 0800 720 601 or visit any Huduma Centre.
