The Canadian and Mexican governments have banned all African residents from entering their countries as cases of the Ebola virus continue to surge in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. By Friday morning, according to Reuters, over 1000 cases had been reported in the DRC and Uganda. Mexican and Canadian authorities stated that nobody will be allowed to enter their countries if they come from Africa.
The move comes even as the Kenyan government allowed the United States to set up a quarantine centre in Kenya. This happened after the US government said it would not allow any American infected with Ebola to land on its soil. The Trump administration, in consultation with Kenya’s President William Ruto, agreed to set up a quarantine centre in Kenya after parting with Sh 1.7 billion.
The move poses a major health challenge to Kenya, which has a population of 57 million people but has no functioning health infrastructure due to corruption and embezzlement of public funds by senior government officials. Many Kenyans have opposed the move, but Ruto, who is seen by critics as a theocratic leader, is pushing ahead with the construction of the quarantine center. The centre will only cater for US Americans only.
Normal Kenyans who get sick with Ebola will be left to die since the country has no functioning health system, despite the government allocating billions of shillings to the health docket. Most of those health funds are looted by senior government officials who then build apartments in Nairobi using the stolen money.
