Two United States military aircraft have just left Ramstein Air Base in Germany, heading to Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki. Their mission is to bring United States citizens infected with the deadly Ebola virus from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Initially, US citizens who contracted Ebola in DRC were being airlifted to Ramstein Airbase in Germany for specialized treatment. But the German government refused, saying the move posed huge risks to the German population.
But Kenya, which is known for corruption and a lack of regard for its own citizens, agreed to quarantine American citizens.
The US Treasury then coughed up Sh 1.7 billion to grease the hands of senior government officials. Many Kenyans are now protesting the move. They say Kenya, with its dilapidated health infrastructure, cannot handle an Ebola outbreak due to a lack of expertise and massive corruption from senior government officials.
Already, massive groundwork is underway inside Laikipia Airbase to host a quarantine facility for 50 Ebola patients.
The move poses a great danger to a country of 57 million people, the majority of whom have no access to good health care.
