Renowned Kenyan architect and urban planning scholar Prof. Alfred Omenya has sparked heated debate online after sharply criticizing the newly unveiled State House renovations, describing the design as “plain mediocre.”
Taking to X, the respected professor questioned the architectural value of the revamped State House, arguing that the country missed an opportunity to create a structure that reflects Kenya’s identity, prestige, and evolving architectural standards.
“I am a Professor of Architecture. I have been a judge for Commonwealth Association of Architects Awards, International Union of Architects Awards, Asia Architecture Awards, AAK-Crown Architecture Awards, etc. Feel free to ignore my opinion. The New State House is plain MEDIOCRE!” Omenya wrote.
The tweet quickly gained traction, triggering mixed reactions from Kenyans, architects, designers, and political commentators.
Prof. Omenya is widely respected in architectural circles both locally and internationally.
His reference to serving as a judge for globally recognized architectural awards gave additional weight to his criticism, with many social media users viewing his remarks as a professional assessment rather than a political attack.
