A 35-year-old British national, David Walsh, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of 46-year-old Kenyan mother of four, Irene Mbugua, whose body was found at his home in Birmingham.
Mbugua was discovered with fatal head and facial injuries at Walsh’s property on Markby Road in Winson Green in June 2025.
Prosecutors initially charged Walsh with murder, but he denied the charge and instead admitted to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
He also pleaded guilty to four counts of assaulting emergency workers who responded to the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the fatal injuries were not fully detailed in court during the plea hearing.
However, authorities confirmed that emergency services were called to the residence, where Mbugua was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mbugua had relocated to the United Kingdom two years ago to work in the care sector, seeking better opportunities to support her four children back home.
Family members described her as a hardworking and devoted mother who was the sole breadwinner of her household.
In an emotional tribute, her relatives said her death has left a devastating gap in the lives of her children and extended family, who depended on her both financially and emotionally.
Walsh is expected to be sentenced on March 26.
The court indicated that it is awaiting further reports before determining the appropriate punishment.
