The law has finally caught up with a middle-aged woman suspected of being part of a notorious criminal syndicate that has been drugging and robbing unsuspecting men in entertainment joints around Karatina.
The suspect, identified as Alice Wamugo Mwangi, was arraigned before a Karatina court, which granted police seven days to detain her at Karatina Police Station as detectives continue investigations into a theft involving more than KSh500,000.
The detention order was issued following an application by Sergeant Amina Thomas of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Karatina, who told the court that investigators required more time to complete their inquiries.
According to investigators, Alice is believed to be linked to a gang commonly referred to as the “mchele babes,” which allegedly targets male patrons in entertainment joints by drugging them before stealing their cash and valuables.
Police allege that on the night of June 12 and 13, the suspect, together with accomplices who are still at large, lured a man to a local hotel where he was allegedly drugged with an unknown substance before losing more than KSh500,000.
Detectives say efforts are underway to identify and arrest the other members of the suspected criminal network.
The suspect will remain in custody pending further investigations, with the case scheduled for mention on August 5.
