Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged a deliberate scheme to deny identity cards to young people in regions perceived to be opposed to President William Ruto, raising concerns over the integrity of the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the unveiling of the DCP Kiambu gubernatorial candidate, Gachagua claimed that the government is manipulating the issuance of national identity cards to influence voter dynamics in its favor.
“As we go towards the General Election, William Ruto and his people are sensing defeat and have decided to interfere with the issuance of IDs. In areas perceived to be against him, our young people are being denied IDs,” Gachagua alleged.
He cited Nakuru County as an example, claiming that youths from communities believed to support the President are receiving their IDs within days, while those from areas seen as opposition strongholds are forced to wait for months.
“In Nakuru, communities that support William Ruto are being issued IDs within 2–3 days, and chiefs even deliver them directly. But in areas perceived to be against him, the process takes 3–4 months,” he claimed.
Gachagua warned that such practices could disenfranchise thousands of young voters and undermine the credibility of the electoral process if not addressed.
