Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that there are plans to overturn the outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election if the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate is defeated.
Speaking while addressing the press, Gachagua claimed he had received information that there were attempts to nullify the results or create chaos to force a repeat election.
“I’m told they want to try and overturn the results and if they can’t, they cause chaos so that the election is cancelled so that they get another opportunity to repeat the elections. Even if they do, the results will remain the same. That is the Kikuyu nation for you,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President maintained that, in his view, a repeat election would not change the outcome, expressing confidence in the voting pattern of the electorate.
His remarks come amid heightened political tension following the closely watched Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Earlier in the day, chaos erupted at some polling stations after armed, hooded men reportedly gained access to polling centres, triggering confrontations with members of the public.
The Ol Kalou by-election has shaped up as a fierce political contest between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Sammy Ngotho, and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Samuel Muchina.
