Kirinyaga Woman Representative and lawyer Njeri Maina has explained why former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua chose to follow the court ruling on his impeachment petition from home instead of attending the proceedings in person.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Njeri said Gachagua watched the judgment alongside his family, noting that there is no legal requirement for a client to be physically present in court during such proceedings.
“Our client was watching from home with his family. It is not mandatory that the client attend,” she explained.
According to her, the decision was also influenced by concerns over alleged propaganda suggesting possible plans to implicate Gachagua in incidents surrounding the ruling.
“Given that there was propaganda that there could be something planned, we would not want him implicated in anything,” Njeri stated.
She emphasized that the former Deputy President remains committed to peace and had already urged his supporters to remain calm regardless of the court’s outcome.
“He is a peace-loving Kenyan. He has called upon his supporters to take whatever the outcome, knowing that we shall proceed to the Court of Appeal,” she added.
Njeri also expressed disappointment with the ruling, describing it as a setback for Gachagua’s legal team.
“I would describe this judgment as gravely disappointing,” she said.
