Siaya Governor James Orengo has made explosive revelations about his long-standing relationship with Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, claiming he played a pivotal role in securing his freedom after he was convicted in a murder case years ago.
Speaking during an interview on KTN, Orengo said he personally represented Wandayi in court after he was charged and sentenced over a murder case, eventually helping overturn the conviction.
According to the veteran lawyer and politician, his support for Wandayi did not end in the courtroom.
He also claimed to have stood firmly behind him when he ventured into elective politics, ensuring he secured the ODM nomination that paved the way for his election as Member of Parliament.
“This is a guy I removed from jail. He was charged and sentenced with murder, and I spent time in court trying to defend him. When he wanted to be a member of parliament, I stood by him and made sure he got the nomination,” Orengo said.
The governor made the remarks while criticizing the recent political realignments involving some ODM leaders who have joined President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.
Orengo dismissed suggestions that the politicians crossed over because they believed in President Ruto’s leadership or policies.
Instead, he argued that personal interests and attractive political opportunities were the driving force behind their decisions.
“A lot of this is claptrap; it’s nothing to do with their love for Ruto. They have just seen a good deal, and that deal is too attractive,” he stated.
