Siaya Governor James Orengo has criticized the recent fundraising event in Migori County where public officers reportedly contributed KSh 35 million in one hour, questioning the government’s priorities amid unresolved infrastructure challenges.
Speaking during an interview on KTN, Orengo said he was shocked to witness senior public officials arriving at the event in numerous helicopters, which he claimed were funded at public expense, before raising millions of shillings within a short period.
According to the governor, the display of opulence contrasted sharply with the struggles faced by ordinary Kenyans, particularly residents of Migori who have been affected by poor infrastructure.
“I never knew in my life I would see a situation where public officers ride in 10, 20 choppers at public expense and then, within one hour, contribute Sh35 million, and next to the venue of that event is a bridge that was swept away by storms in Migori, and for eight or nine months, that bridge has not been repaired,” Orengo said.
He argued that it was difficult to justify such a large fundraising effort while essential public infrastructure remained neglected for months.
The Siaya governor suggested that repairing critical infrastructure, such as the damaged bridge in Migori, should take precedence over what he described as displays of political generosity at public events.
