Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga and his fiancée, Grace Edith Akinyi, reportedly narrowly escaped losing over Ksh 67 million in a controversial land transaction involving a Nairobi real estate company.
According to a reports, the football star and his partner had planned to invest in commercial land in Nairobi after earning lucrative returns from his professional football career abroad.
The couple reportedly identified a parcel of land registered as LR No. 3734/423, which was being sold by Captain Real Estate Company at a cost of Ksh 67,292,500.
After signing the sale agreement in April 2022, Olunga made payments in installments through the company’s bank account at Nairobi Riverside Platinum Branch and completed the agreed amount by September 2022.
However, trouble reportedly began after the company allegedly refused to transfer the property to the couple despite receiving full payment.
“The company refused to honour its end of the bargain to effect the transfer of the property to Grace Akinyi and myself,” Olunga stated in court documents.
He further claimed that the firm kept giving them false promises before they allegedly discovered that the same property had been advertised and sold to a third party.
Alarmed by the developments, Olunga hired a lawyer and moved to court seeking justice and a refund of the money.
“Despite the demand to reimburse our money, the company consistently treated us to promises and counter-promises without any action,” he said.
“Our advocate then wrote to the company asking for a refund but they did nothing. They were notoriously enjoying possession of our money and using the property at our expense,” he added.
The matter was later resolved in March 2023 after the two parties reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement, enabling Olunga to recover his money.
