Kasarani Police Station Is A Crime Scene As Police IG Blocks Journalist From Exposing Corruption And Filth

A prominent Kenyan journalist has turned the spotlight on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja after being blocked on X by the country’s top police boss, a reaction that has raised serious questions about the IG’s commitment to fighting corruption within his own ranks.

The journalist, identified as Juma G, had been exposing rampant corruption at Kasarani Police Station, one of Nairobi’s busiest stations, which has quietly earned a notorious reputation as a hub of bribery, extortion and underhand dealings that have gone unchecked for far too long.

At the heart of the scandal is what is happening along busy Mwiki Road, where traffic police officers attached to Kasarani Police Station have turned the stretch into a personal cash machine.

In broad daylight, officers brazenly stop motorists and demand bribes, slapping innocent car owners with trumped-up road offences and pocketing the money without fear of consequence. The same pattern plays out along the road to ICIPE and at the Roysambu Roundabout, where officers conduct their extortion racket in full view of the public, confident that nobody will hold them to account.

Juma G documented and exposed the officers’ conduct, naming the station and detailing exactly what is happening and where. When he escalated the matter by formally flagging it to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, the response he received from the country’s most senior police officer was not an investigation, not an acknowledgement, and not even silence. He was blocked on X.

The significance of that action cannot be understated. By blocking a journalist who had just reported corruption within the police service directly to him, Douglas Kanja has not only failed in his duty to act on a credible complaint. He has effectively signalled to corrupt officers across the country that the man at the top has no appetite for accountability, and that those who expose wrongdoing within the police will find the door firmly shut in their faces.

With bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission(EACC) and the Police Internal Affairs Unit theoretically mandated to deal with exactly this kind of misconduct, the question Kenyans are asking is a painful one. If the IG himself blocks whistleblowers instead of protecting them, what hope do ordinary citizens have of seeing rogue officers face any consequences at all?

Here is what Juma G wrote on X.
