Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of Kenya Airways pilot Kelvin Theuri Wachira, who was attacked after a night out at the Nairobi West Prison Officers’ Mess.

Wachira, a native of Karima village in Othaya Constituency, Nyeri County, is said to have been in good health until Sunday, July 19, when he visited the social club at around 3 p.m. to unwind with friends.

According to preliminary investigations, an altercation broke out between the pilot and several individuals inside the establishment before escalating into violence.

Investigators believe Wachira was struck on the head with a blunt object during the confrontation, leaving him with critical injuries.

Police say a waiter later escorted him to his white Mercedes-Benz, which remained parked inside the Nairobi West Prison compound.

However, detectives believe he later left the vehicle under circumstances that are yet to be established.

A prison officer attached to the Prison Headquarters, who was heading home, found Wachira lying unconscious outside the prison entrance along Lang’ata Road and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital.

He was admitted in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

A postmortem examination established that the pilot died from severe head injuries caused by blunt force trauma, leading detectives to classify the case as murder.

Investigators also found that Wachira’s Mercedes-Benz was still parked inside the prison compound after the incident, raising fresh questions about what happened between the alleged assault and the discovery of his body outside the gate.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata have taken over the investigation and are pursuing leads to identify and arrest those responsible.

The tragic death has devastated his family, friends, colleagues, and residents of Karima village, where he was widely admired as the area’s only commercial pilot and a source of inspiration to many young people aspiring to join the aviation industry.
