Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit (BFIU) have arrested a man accused of spending over KSh 6.7 million that was mistakenly credited to his bank account.
The suspect, Dickson Yiaile Sitei, was arrested on Saturday, October 24, 2026, along Lantana Road in Westlands, Nairobi.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred on November 18, 2025, when a company was processing 74 electronic payments.
Among the transactions was a legitimate rent payment of KSh 72,000 owed to Sitei for the company’s shop in Suswa.
However, an error during processing resulted in both the rent payment and KSh 6,744,354 intended for another company being deposited into his bank account.
When the company sought to recover the money, Sitei allegedly spent the excess funds instead of returning them, prompting investigations into the matter.
The case file was subsequently forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which directed that Sitei face charges of intentionally withholding an erroneously delivered payment under Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, and money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering Act.
Sitei remains in custody as detectives process him ahead of his arraignment in court.
The DCI has warned members of the public that money mistakenly credited to their accounts does not become theirs, adding that anyone who deliberately withholds and spends such funds risks facing criminal charges.
