Former Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has sent a chilling and carefully worded message on X, strongly hinting that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could soon find himself behind bars.
In the post, Kuria drew a pointed and deliberate parallel between Gachagua and two of East Africa’s most prominent imprisoned opposition leaders, Uganda’s Kizza Besigye and Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu.
Besigye, the veteran Ugandan opposition figure, is currently awaiting a treason trial at Luzira Prison, while Lissu is incarcerated at Ukonga Central Prison in Dar es Salaam. By invoking both names in the context of Gachagua, Kuria’s message, though wrapped in cryptic language, was impossible to misread.
Gachagua has become the most vocal and arguably the most effective critic of President William Ruto’s administration, leading the united opposition with a combativeness that has clearly unsettled those in power. His supporters see him as a fearless champion of the people. His detractors, particularly within the ruling establishment, have been calling for his arrest, accusing him of ethnic mobilisation, promoting violence and fuelling anarchy across the country.
Those calls have not been coming from ordinary commentators alone. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has already issued a direct public warning to Gachagua, telling him plainly that he risks arrest if he continues what the government describes as dividing the country and inciting Kenyans against the state.
Kuria’s post on Friday has added fuel to that fire, and political observers have not missed the timing, which they see as a signal from within Ruto’s inner circle that the wheels may already be in motion.
